5 ways saffron destroys cancer cells

Saffron, an ancient cooking spice and staple of the Mediterranean diet, has also played an important role in traditional and herbal healing systems, including Ayurveda and Chinese Traditional Medicine.  On top of that, exciting research highlights saffron’s ability to attack cancer cells on multiple fronts – at every stage of the disease.

The carotenoids in saffron stop the growth of cancer

Saffron, made from the flowers of the Crocus sativa plant, contains three carotenoids – or antioxidant plant pigments – that have the potential to launch a preemptive strike against cancer.

In animal studies, researchers found that oral administration of a saffron extract – given prior to the administration of a powerful laboratory-produced carcinogenic substance – completely prevented the formation of tumors – a striking result.

Saffron extracts cause aggressive cancer cells to kill themselves

The term apoptosis refers to the programmed cell death that ordinarily controls and regulates cell growth. Cancer cells lose their vulnerability to apoptosis, giving them their devastating ability to grow unchecked.

Crocetin, crocin and safranal can all reverse this process by producing apoptosis, or cell suicide, in cancer cells – even in the case of aggressive cancers of the liver, lungs and stomach.

An animal study published in Hepatology showed that a two-week pretreatment course of saffron caused apoptosis, blocked inflammation and reduced the incidence and size of cancerous nodules of the liver, which had been developed as a result of the cancer-producing chemical diethylnitrosamine – a toxin found in such everyday substances as tobacco smoke, gasoline and even processed foods.

In a world abounding with carcinogens, it’s easy to see why researchers believe saffron can be a powerful and protective ally.But saffron has additional cancer-fighting benefits to offer.

Saffron decreases production of destructive enzymes

In addition to blocking cancer triggers and creating apoptosis, saffron inhibits the production of matrix metalloproteinase, or MMP, one of the substances that cancer cells use to destroy the protein matrix between cells in healthy tissue, an important factor in the spread of cancer throughout the body.

According to researchers, crocetin from saffron was found to decrease breast cancer cells’ ability to produce MMP – reducing their invasiveness and successfully preventing them from penetrating and invading nearby healthy tissues.  In fact, the team noted that crocetin “greatly attenuated” production of MMP, while also reducing levels of gelatinase – another enzyme that plays a central role in cancer invasiveness and tumor progression.

Saffron starves tumors of oxygen and nutrients

Crocetin, crocin and safranal can suppress angiogenesis – the process by which tumors add new blood vessels. Researchers believe that they achieve this by reducing levels of a vital signaling molecule that tumors produce in order to form new blood supplies.

In this way, saffron helps to deprives tumor masses of blood, oxygen and nutrients.

Crocetin has produced dramatic regression of pancreatic tumors – even after the tumors were already detectable – thereby giving rise to hope that saffron can reverse cancer growth.

Saffron suppresses inflammatory response

Scientists have long known that inflammation plays a key role in the development of cancer. Saffron’s powerful anti-inflammatory effects give it yet another weapon in its cancer-fighting arsenal.

In fact, researchers identified saffron’s inflammation-blocking properties as a key factor in the encouraging results of many cell and animal studies.

Finally, in a study published in Experimental Oncology, saffron caused a stunning reduction of proliferation in colon cancer cells – slashing the rate to 2.8 percent of the rate of untreated cells. And, it accomplished this without harming healthy cells.

In an animal study published in Human and Experimental Toxicology, mice were given saffron for five days before being given cisplatin, cyclophosphamide and mitomycin-C – all common anti-tumor drugs. Molecular Hydrogen For Cancer And Other Diseases

Scientific researchers tell us, “Hydrogen is extremely unique since it has the capability to act at the cellular level. In the case of hydrogen, we are talking about the ultimate in smallness proving to be the biggest medical breakthrough of the 21st century. There is no toxicity to H2 because the byproduct of the free-radical neutralizing reaction is water. Each molecule of H2 will neutralize 2 hydroxyl radicals into two molecules of H2O hydrating your cells in the process. Hydrogen water at a concentration of 1.6 mg/L would have more “antioxidant” molecules than 100 mg of vitamin C, as there are more total molecules in 1.6 mg of hydrogen compared 100 mg of vitamin C.


Now, one can have 2 ppm (2.0 mg/L) of hydrogen infused water by dropping an Active H2 tablet in a ½ liter bottle of water. If you use a smaller 12 oz. bottle of water, the concentration is even higher. With late stage cancer and many other medical emergencies one would want to drink water with the highest hydrogen concentration available. As a medicine, doctors will obviously favor molecular hydrogen in tablet form for ease of administration and higher concentration.

Molecular hydrogen is a medical leap that is going to help many people. It elevates oral medicine to the level of intravenous medicine because of the ultra-quick absorption and dispersion deep into the cells. Hydrogen is intriguing. As explained by Tyler LeBaron, founder of the Molecular Hydrogen Foundation, hydrogen powers the sun’s fusion, it is key to ATP production within the mitochondria, and it is the father of all other elements. Hydrogen, along with oxygen, has been intrinsically involved with evolution of life in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes (e.g. hydrogenases, hydrogenosomes, mitochondria, etc.). The extremes of oxygen and hydrogen provide balance between oxidation and reduction, which is vital to life. 

Hydrogen in the body is mostly bound to carbon, oxygen and nitrogen. It is part of almost every molecule in your body: DNA, proteins, sugars, fats. The hydrogen bond – which forms between atoms that “share” a hydrogen atom, is one of the most important interactions that makes biological molecules behave as they do. Thus, hydrogen is an important factor in the regulation of physiology.

Molecular Hydrogen is an ideal antioxidant molecule for oxidative stress in the mitochondria due to its small size. It is one of the very few, if not only antioxidant molecules that can reach the inside of the mitochondria. H2 directly protects mitochondria that are exposed to reactive oxygen species. Preliminary clinical trials show that drinking hydrogen-dissolved water seems to improve the pathology of mitochondrial disorders. Drinking H2-water stimulates energy metabolism as measured by O2 consumption and CO2 production.

This is what I would call the ultimate testimony from a doctor about what you can expect if we start supplementing with the hydrogen.

Antioxidant, Antitumor Cancer Treatment

Acute oxidative stress induced by ischemia-reperfusion or inflammation causes serious damage to tissues, and persistent oxidative stress is accepted as one of the causes of many common diseases including cancer. H2 selectivelyreduces the hydroxyl radical, the most cytotoxic of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and effectively protected cells; however, H2 does not react with other ROS, which possess physiological roles. The inhalation of H2 gas markedly suppressed brain injury by buffering the effects of oxidative stress. Thus, H2 can be used as an effective antioxidant therapy; owing to its ability to rapidly diffuse across membranes, it can reach and react with cytotoxic ROS and thus protect against oxidative damage.

ROS are involved in metastatic processes including invasion of cancer cells into surrounding primary tumor sites.  Generated ROS regulates tumor progression, indicating that ROS is situated upstream in many signaling pathways including the pathway involved in metastasis. At tumor sites, large amount of ROS are produced by activated neutrophils and macrophages in the inflammatory response.

Hydrogen water erases ROS indispensable for tumor cell growth. Scientists who have studied its antitumor effects used hydrogen in combination with hyperthermia at 42°C and found it to be potent as an anti-tumor agent.Therapeutic opportunities of hydrogen increases in the presence of specific catalysts or heat thus for cancer and other serious diseases it should be used in the context of a full protocol.


H2Bev is one of the first prepackaged molecular hydrogen products. It provides approximately 1 ppm of H2 and includes a variety of B-vitamins and Erythritol. Despite its comparatively high-ticket price (about 4 times that of the tablets with shipping) it is ready to drink immediately (best served chilled) from its special aluminum container. Water Ionizers Produce Hydrogen Water

It is very revealing that it is not the high pH alkaline water that provides health benefits but the molecular hydrogen – but only if the ionizer electrodes are brand new or perfectly free of scale and you drink the water right away. Otherwise, the H2 will outgas quite quickly. In other words, the hydroxide ion (OH-) is NOT responsible for most of the positive effects observed when drinking alkaline ionized water. The active antioxidant is dissolved molecular hydrogen (H2). The highest quality lower cost ionizer from a reputable company offers a sizable discount if you mention who referred you.

Not all ionizers make sufficient H2 to be considered even “low level,” in terms of hydrogen concentration,  as the electrolytic plates become scaled or fouled, they stop make H2 completely. Importantly, the ionizer above is one of the few that reverses the electrodes for cleaning whenever the unit has not been used for 6 hours to make sure the hydrogen concentration is constantly as high as possible. Typically, at normal flow and normal source water the concentration of H2 from an alkaline water ionizer is around 0.1 ppm to 0.7 ppm. By running the water very slowly, these machines may increase the molecular hydrogen concentration.”

Hydrogen, Inflammation and Pain

The cells that are repeatedly exposed to inflammatory mediators will have the genes that code for inflammatory response proteins switched on, and thus be in a constant state of inflammation. This leads to diseases and health conditions that are strongly linked to inflammation, including asthma and cardiovascular diseases. Some of the molecules in the body that can instigate a change in gene expression are: Nf-kB, TNFa, and reactive nitrogen species such as nitric oxide and peroxynitrite.

Hydrogen indirectly affects gene expression through its actions to modulate molecules that have a direct epigenetic effect, Molecular Hydrogen can:

11 things that can reduce your risk of getting cancer

For many, a cancer diagnosis is one of the scariest things imaginable. Though most cancers are treatable, it’s always best to try and prevent serious medical problems before they have a chance to occur.Here are a few things that, according to scientific research, can actually reduce your risk of getting cancer.

1. Don’t smoke or use tobacco products.

Most people probably know that smoking causes lung cancer, but that’s not the only damage cigarettes can do. According to the Mayo Clinic, lighting up can also leave you with cancer of the mouth, throat, larynx, cervix, bladder, pancreas, and kidney. Cutting out all tobacco exposure is important if you’re looking to minimize your risk of cancer. Chewing tobacco has also been linked to cancer of the mouth and pancreas, and second hand smoke can increase your risk of lung cancer, the Mayo Clinic further reports.

2. Limit alcohol, as your cancer risk can increase the more you drink.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there is strong scientific evidence suggesting the consumption of alcohol can lead to several types of cancers, including breast, liver, head, neck, and colorectal cancer. Research has also shown that people who use both alcohol and tobacco have a great risk of developing cancer, and that cancer risk increases the more a person drinks.

3. Maintaining a healthy weight lowers your risk of disease.

Watching your weight can benefit more than just your waistline. The Mayo Clinic suggests staying at a healthy weight can lower the risk of different cancers including breast, prostate, colon, lung, and kidney cancer.

4. Staying active is a cancer-fighting habit.

The Mayo Clinic notes that regular physical activity could lower your risk of breast and colon cancer.

You don’t have to be a gym rat to benefit from exercise. Any amount of physical activity is good for you, but adults should strive for 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous activity.

5. Regular cancer screening tests can prevent some types of the disease from developing.

The American Cancer Society recommends regular screening tests to detect cancers before they have had a chance to spread. Some tests, like cervical and colon tests, can even prevent cancer from developing in the first place, according to the American Cancer Society. You should always attend scheduled screening tests and talk to your doctor about any additional tests you might like to have performed.

6. A healthy diet is crucial for preventing certain cancers.

Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and high-quality sources of protein is good for your health in general, but it can also help prevent certain cancers. 11. Consider taking a low-dose aspirin.

Harvard Medical School advises that men who take aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs seem to have a lower risk of colon and prostate cancers. However, the effect has not been definitively proven and taking too much aspirin can cause stomach bleeding.

How Fast Does Cancer Grow?

Over the years, I’ve found that many people don’t seem to realize that the vast majority of malignancies aren’t palpable and don’t create symptoms for several years, and sometimes decades. This is a critical point to understand, as our choices today are unmistakably what determine our risk for cancer and most chronic diseases in the years ahead – even thirty, forty, fifty years ahead.

When looking to understand the pace at which cancer grows and spreads, the main concept to consider is doubling time, which is the amount of time it takes for one cell to divide or for a group of cells (like a benign or malignant tumor) to double in size.

Doubling time is different for various tumours, but if you know the size of a tumor at two different points in its lifespan, you can calculate doubling time with the following 

To put this idea into numbers that are easily visualized, let’s say that a 1 millimeter mass (about one-fifth the diameter of a dime) is detected within lung tissue on a CT scan. If this same mass is measured to be 15 millimeters (the diameter of a dime) two years later, doubling time for this mass is 105 days.

Here’s the take-home point: a 1 millimeter cluster of cancerous cells typically contains somewhere in the ball park of a million cells, and on average, takes about six years to get to this size. Generally, a tumor can’t be detected until it reaches the 1 millimeter mark.

So to develop a mass that is likely to be problematic (say, about 5 centimeters to put a number to this example), make no mistake in understanding that this is a journey of many years.

To put it another way, a person doesn’t go from being relatively healthy to having cancer suddenly appear and spread throughout his body within a few months or even a year. To have a growth that is visible to the eye or cancer that has metastasized, generally, it’s scientifically sound to state that the cancerous mass began developing many years ago.

I like to share this information with clients because I find that it tends to heighten awareness of how important today’s food and lifestyle choices are in determining our risk for disease in the future.

It’s simple: what we do today determines our risk for disease tomorrow.

With this thought in mind, we can strive to apply the following guidelines to our daily choices to reduce risk of most chronic, degenerative conditions, including almost all types of cancer:

  1. Limit intake of refined sugar.
  2. Limit intake of unhealthy oils that are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids.
  3. Limit exposure to ionizing radiation and electromagnetic fields.
  4. Avoid use of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement drugs whenever possible.
  5. Minimize exposure to exogenous toxins like pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, dioxins, asbestos, volatile organic compounds, and polychlorinated biphenyls.
  6. Minimize or completely avoid use of recreational drugs.
  7. Optimize vitamin D status.
  8. Work at getting regular aerobic exercise and restful sleep.
  9. Strive to be emotionally balanced i.e. avoid living in a fight/flight state where sympathetic nervous system output dominates parasympathetic (rest/digest) tone.

I think it’s worth noting that the concept of cancer growth happening at a predictable pace applies to all major types of chronic disease. Risk of a cerebrovascular accident (stroke) is determined by how healthy our blood vessels and blood pressure are over decades, not by a sudden transient spike in pressure. Risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is determined by all of the substances that our lungs have been exposed to since day one. And so on and so forth.
